MATCH REPORTS

Senior Plate Quarter Final -  5th  March 2012

St Andrews 1- Rathdown 1

Match Report

Our Senior 1st’s travelled the short distance to Booterstown to play Premier League finalists St Andrews for a place in the plate semi- final. The game started with the home team taking up the early pace with some well worked attacking moves; however, despite their dominance St Andrews failed to breach the Rathdown defence, full credit to Samantha, Emily, Alyce and Kirsty for their committed display. As the half progressed, Rathdown did manage one or two efforts and gradually grew in confidence as the half drew to a close and finished 0-0.  It was much of the same in the 2nd half with the home team winning numerous short corners, yet again the Rathdown defence held strong. The real story of the game was our goalie Blathnaid, she made some outstanding saves to keep us in the game.  Our tireless midfield of Orla, Stephanie and Slaine gave a wonderful example of determination and skill which lifted all of us through the 2nd half.  Despite the heroic effort, St Andrews finally got the breakthrough with 5 mins left on the clock to take a 1-0 lead. With Sharpie now in full voice, Rathdown mustered up one final attack and with some great work from Lauren and Sarah, Milly sneaked an equaliser with a minute to go. The game went to extra time with both teams exchanging chances but the deadlock could not be broken.  St Andrews progressed when they won the 1v1 decider 4-2. Well done to all the girls, substitutes, Coach and supporters. This result shows we can compete with the best. Roll on next season.
