Junior School Young Scientists Excel Again!

On Thursday, January 14th, the two P6 classes presented their science projects at the BTYS exhibitions in the RDS. This is the fourth year that the Junior School has participated in the Primary section of the competition. It was a wonderful opportunity for both classes to showcase all the great work they have been doing over the last few months. All the girls did a superb job of explaining their work to the judges, parents and visitors.

Waterworks (P6B)

P6B researched the whole area of water as part of the school's work on their Green Flag on water. The girls researched every aspect of water and conducted surveys on water usage at home and at school. They monitored the water meter over a period of time and came up with lots of different ways to save water throughout the school. With water charges on the way and all the problems with water shortages after the recent cold spell, this project is well worth reading! (http://rathdownwater.wikispaces.com/)

Star Surfers (P6G)

This was another very comprehensive research project in the area of astronomy. The girls developed a clear understanding of astronomy that included a study of planets, constellations, astrology, mythology, the solar system and the stars. The class has created a wonderful teaching resource for the whole school to use. (http://rathdownastronomy.wikispaces.com/

Congratulations and well done to all the students in P6 and to their teachers: Ms. Kerruish, Ms. Kelly and Mr. McCarthy. Both classes received a Special Recognition Award from the Primary Science judges. The judges praised the girls on the quality of their presentation and in particular on the amount of research that was carried out by both classes. They were very impressed with all the technology the girls used throughout the projects. The girls arrived home with two beautiful Cavan Crystal plaques. Well done, everyone!
