INFORMATION ON SWINE FLU (H1N1)
Rathdown School is following current public health advice in relation to Pandemic (H1N1) 2009. We are liasing with the HSE and the Department of Public Health to monitor flu conditions and following their guidance on the management of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in our school. As a result we have installed hand sanitisers thorughout the school buildings and wipes will be available to all puils. At Form Time next Tuesday, the girls will be told how to take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection. We will also keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
Preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of influenza or flu. Appropriate hygiene measures have been put in place in order to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesss. Good hand hygiene and cough etiquette will be strongly promoted to staff and pupils and information provided on the signs and symptoms of the illness. Pupils who become unwell at school will be referred to the School Nurse and screened for Influenza Like Illness (ILI)
If a pupil develops Influenza Like Illness (ILI) at school, parents will be contacted immediately and arrangements made for her to be taken home. The pupil may not return to school until 7 days from the onset of symptoms have passed.
The following are some things you can do to help:
• Teach your daughter good health habits re hand washing and respiratory etiquette. • Provide her with tissues and a pocket hand sanitiser • Ensure that school has up to date parent contact details • Be aware of the symptoms of flu-like-illness (see attached HSE information) • Keep sick children at home. If they have Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza they should stay away from school for 7 days from the onset of symptoms • If your daughter is in a high risk group for complications of Pandemic (H1N1) influenza contact your GP for advice prior to commencing school. Inform the School Nurse of any special requirements
