Welcome from the Junior School Principal

Avril Lamplugh Junior School Principal

As you will see from viewing our website, Rathdown Junior School is a vibrant, colourful, friendly and happy place of learning. We welcome students from pre-school age (3yrs) up to Sixth Class level (11/12 yrs), after which the majority of girls move on to our Senior School. Everyone who has a role to play in the daily life of the Junior School works very enthusiastically to ensure that every student will enter into and benefit from an environment which is welcoming and friendly and conducive to learning. We have an exciting and extensive curriculum, catering to the talents and abilities of each child, with first-class facilities and equipment to help implement this curriculum. Rathdown has a very strong sense of community where teachers and parents work closely together to make sure that every student gains the confidence, knowledge and essential skills to meet her own unique potential.

Our aim is to keep Rathdown in the forefront of excellence in education. We follow the child-centred National School Curriculum as set out by the Department of Education and Science with a strong emphasis on cross-curricular and co-operative learning. Rathdown Junior School prides itself on its excellent use of ICT as an integral part of each student’s learning. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and two computers. We also have a fully networked Computer Room, where every class learn their ICT skills with a specialist ICT teacher each week.

This school year, I am delighted to introduce the fabulous Mind Lab programme (www.mindlab.com) to the Junior School. We are the first school in Ireland to have this programme as part of our school curriculum. All of our teachers are qualified Mind Lab trainers. Our parents financed the purchase of all the games for the school. The Mind Lab programme puts the child at the centre of all learning activities and engages them where they are most receptive and enthusiastic – through games. By playing board games, the students learn new thinking skills, social skills and emotional intelligence skills.

I would strongly encourage you to visit our school so that you get the opportunity to see first hand what a special place Rathdown Junior School really is. Contact us at 01 2013936 or e-mail me at juniorschoolhead@rathdownschool.ie

I look forward to meeting you.

Yours sincerely,

Avril Lamplugh
