This is where the Rathdown journey begins! The aim of the pre-school is to have fun learning and be happy! With an experienced teacher, a very special atmosphere prevails in the classroom and results in a community of self-sufficient, curious and happy children who eagerly participate in all class and school activities.
The colourful classroom includes an interactive whiteboard, a double paint easel, a Reading Corner and lots of child-friendly materials for the students to work with. The programme encourages individual and social development, helping each child achieve her full potential.

Pre- School Activities:
Jolly Phonics Programme – The students learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet using the Jolly Phonics approach. The students sing along with the cds and engage in the activities on the interactive whiteboard.
Sensorial and Practical life activities: The students learn through their senses, using some of the Montessori materials like the cylinders, Pink Tower and Brown Stair. They also enjoy the Practical Life activities too like polishing and sorting exercises.
Art and Craft activities: The students paint every day using the paint easel. This exercise helps them to develop their creative side and give each child a love of painting. They also do collage, pottery and create pictures related to seasonal events.
Circle Time: Every day, each child is given an opportunity to share their news, show new
materials, read stories, say nursery rhymes and sing songs. The highlight of the week is Show and Tell, when each child brings in something to show others and they talk about it at circle.
PE Activities: The girls participate enthusiastically in games like Traffic Lights and Land and Sea, play with hoola hoops, throw and catch balls and run in many kinds of running races.
Music: Musical activities go on in the classroom every day. A specialist Music teacher works with the girls once a week. The girls love to sing songs, recite poems, move to music and use simple percussion instruments.
ICT: Each student works on their own computer with our specialist ICT teachersin the Computer Room once a week. They use the interactive board and two pcs in the classroom too.
Mind Lab
Mind Lab Activities: This is an exciting new programme and Rathdown Junior School is the first school in Ireland to have this as part of the curriculum in every class. The Mind Lab educational curriculum puts the child at the centre of all learning activities and engages them where they are most receptive and enthusiastic – through games.
Extra- Curricular Activities: Ballet, Irish Dancing and Kinder Music classes are available for the students.
Assessment: Teacher evaluation, regular progress reports, parent-teacher meetings and Christmas and Summer reports will keep you informed of your child’s progress throughout the year.
Events and Activities: The students attend and participate in our daily assembly in the Junior School Hall. They also go out on school outings and attend visiting group presentations that come to the school (Pet Farm, Drama groups etc)
Rathdown JS After School Programme: Early drop off begins at 8.00am. The after school programme is available all year round (excluding Bank/ National Holidays) from 8am – 6pm during holiday times and 12.30pm-6pm during term time.
